Because You Can.

Lately I’ve been doing a lot of doing. Yeah, you know that thing that people do when they’re unsure of the next move? Doing. That’s me. I put my head down and charge toward the next thing on my To Do list because scratching things off makes me feel productive.

But sometimes productivity is morphine for creativity. It makes you feel like everything is okay, but deep down you know morphine doesn’t fix insecurities…it hides them.

Sometimes I do because I’m afraid to create. And I couldn’t bring myself to admit this until JD called me out a few days ago. I sat slack-jawed in the car as he delivered his admonition and then I got out and shut the door a little too loudly. I stomped into our home and straight upstairs and sat at the edge of the bed weighing his words. I almost couldn’t bear the kilos of truth.

At times I’m afraid to create, but I know I need to because creating changes me. It forces me to rethink and morph. And, above all, creating scares me. If I’ve learned anything at all in starting a business, it’s that if you’re not a little bit scared a lot of the time, you’re not pushing yourself enough.

So, here’s to pushing…and dreaming…and creating. Because you can.

I’m in the same boat. A client wants a unique shoot- I know I can do it but I’m terrified to create- to use my imagination. Glad to know I’m not the only one….

I definitely needed to read this, especially as I pursue photography! The fear is necessary and a good thing! Thanks 🙂

Does JD know my husband? I swear they must and not tell us they talk. You could have picked this scene up verbatim right out of my life this last week.

I hear that! I feel like I’ve been living in a constant state of fear lately but I know that means I’m growing and so is my business. It’s funny how badly you want something and then when it comes to you, you want to wildly breathe into a paper bag!

this definitely caught my attention. You do a very good job of letting us all know you are a regular person. A highly successful person. And a success because you are not afraid to be transparent. thank you

My photography teacher shared your blog with the class. And of course I went snooping. I am borderline obsessed with you now! ( not in a restraining order sort of way, more of a compliment way). I like what you do and keep on doing what you are doing. Love it!

The statement about being a little scared a lot of the time is something I so needed to hear! I’m a budding photographer and have a few weddings under my belt, and a few more in the future, and it scares me every time I think about those weddings! Thank you sooo much for sharing this insite!

I do firmly believe it is important to have these wake moments. We get stuck in a routine of doing because it is comfortable. Waking up and starting being scared again is the right thing to do. However, don’t forget to be kind and forgiving to yourself for living in the "safety of doing" for a little while. We all do it at some point, because we are allhumans!

Words of wisdom I definitely needed to hear right now. Just officially took the plunge into the world of professional photography last week. As in, no friends, you can’t just give me gas money to come take pictures for you. Already got several job offers, but terrified! Thanks for sharing, Jasmine!

I sometimes get so depressed because of the fear I’d never get as good as I want to become. I identified sometimes why I procrastinated so much, and I put it down towards the fear of failing. Sometimes it becomes an excuse, but not I try to psych myself out of that situation, and just do. And I have many friends who encourage me to thank for that.

I’m in a similar place Jasmine. Sometimes I allow fear to take hold and I get caught up in a web of doing – or worse, doing nothing. As is said, life isn’t about living without fear, it’s about being able to move forward in spite of it.

I need to be more mindful of those time when I’m feeling stuck and pierce through the fear to be the creative person I know I can be. Thanks so much for sharing and reminding me of this.

I understand completely, sometimes doing something makes you feel better even though putting off creating by doing something can be worse in the long run. It’s nice to have wonderful people in your life who can remind you of what you have the potential to create.

    Hi Jasmine,
I couldn’t agree more, being scared is what makes us grow as we embrace new and exciting opportunities. This post inspired me to write my own post on the subject. I hope you like it:

Jasmine I think you have created so much already – a style people try to recreate on a daily basis. A business that has grown out of the love, passion and determination both of you share together. I believe everyone is capable of so much more than we know & you are so right pushing yourself may unlock a whole other world of amazing – you just need to afford yourself the courage to do it. Love your work.

Here’s to being brave enough to face those words and embrace who you truly want to be. This post speaks so much truth to me.
