FAQ : Wedding Albums

Last week I was incredibly stoked because three new Leather Craftsmen albums arrived via a courier. I was so excited when I opened the door, I almost mobbed him, a la a Justin Timberlake episode from my not-so-distant past. Thankfully, my excitement was contained as I flipped through the album pages. It’s always exciting seeing an album in my hands because it’s like the cherry on top of the proverbial wedding cake. That is, of course, if wedding cakes had cherries.

I commission the ever lovely and talented Amy of Albumesque to design all my albums and we’ve worked hard in defining what I expect and desire from an album. I love clean, modern, and fresh designs…free from clutter, collages, selective coloring, colored backgrounds, and layered imagery. I’m not saying all album design should take the same approach, but I think albums are intended to last the test of time and simplicity always trumps trends. Always.

Here are a few pictures of the albums, as well as a few sample layouts…

You’ll find this stamp of approval on every album that leaves my studio…

Here are a few pictures and layouts from Blake and Brittany’s black leather, 8×10 wedding album…

Here are a few pictures and layouts of Carissa and Brian’s brown leather, 11×14 album…

This is the last page and the back cover…

Here are few pictures and layouts of Kasey and Nick’s black leather, 12×12 wedding album…

Happy Tuesday!

right this second I emailed you asking about albums, and other stuff, so weird, but question on this first album, how many pictures does the couple actually choose for their package?

These are so beautiful! One of my clients just has to get an album this year!

loooove the logo stamping…. but I am not so crazy about the LC albums themselves, the gutter is a bit distracting. your images and spreads are gorgeous and the break down the middle just ruins it. if they would change that about their albums, I would switch companies in a heartbeat.

Again, if I ever get married…I wish my wedding and the photos were just like Carissa and Brian’s.

  17. Jasmine*

    January 27th, 2009 at 11:18 pm

@Mary: I actually opt for the gutter as it preserves the sanctity and life of the album, but you can opt for a gutterless album for sure! πŸ™‚ @Feuza: It depends on the size of the album, but normally for a 15 page album, a client chooses 55 images. They’re, of course, always welcome to add pages should they want more images! πŸ™‚ @Jeramy: I know Laura and, yes, she is amazing! πŸ™‚ @Miranda: Yay! I love you!! I hope you and your mom have a blast choosing the images! πŸ™‚ I KNOW your album is going to be fabbbbbulous! πŸ™‚

  27. Stacy Reeves

    January 28th, 2009 at 1:09 am

I would love to see a full album layout from you. I have been considering simplifying my album designs like this, but it would mean cutting the number of images I include at least in half, if not more, which I feel like my clients would hate. These layouts are pretty but I can’t imagine how you fully tell the story in a reasonable amount of pages. Anyway, beautiful albums, great work!

A few readers asked about the imprinting of the album, so I want to clarify…Leather Craftsmen gives you the option of paying a one-time fee for them to create a imprint of your logo and they’ll stamp all your albums free of charge once the imprint (I think they call it a "die") on file. Hope this helps! πŸ™‚

I am an album designer in St. Louis and I must agree that the simplicity of these albums is the key. The photography is so beautiful in and of itself that there is no reason to add a complex design. If Amy ever decides to pursue another aspect of her career (*wink wink*), I would be so honored to design your wedding albums. I β€œooh” and β€œah” over your images all the time anyway that working with them would make oh so happy. (Anyone else interested in album designs should contact me, too. I don’t think I could ever get sick of looking at wedding pictures, especially from sunny California!)

I love the design of your wedding albums and am of the same mindset of simplicity always trumps trends! Also, I can say that with 110% authority because we have a Leather Craftsman wedding album from our wedding in March/1993 that we just love. Every anniversary we get our album out, sip some champagne & go through our album while watching our tape (yes tape!) of the wedding!! =)
