Matters of the Heart

There are moments when my husband does something so random that it makes me fall more in love with him. Once, on our way to a wedding, we stopped at Taco Bell for lunch (we're as fancy as they come) and sat in the sun while waiting for our to-go meal. JD couldn't help but notice a young mom and her three barefoot kids approach the outdoor window to place their order. They're living out of their car, he whispered to me.

In the blink of an eye, he was out of his chair and making his way to the ordering window. JD smiled and struck up a conversation with the mom…and then asked to pay for her meal. I sat mortified, worried she'd feel disrespected by a stranger, but instead she cried. Slow, soft tears ran down her face and she explained they'd hit a rough spot. From a distance I saw my husband give her the cash in his wallet, and then our order was called. We said goodbye and the family ate their tacos as we pulled out of the driveway.

My husband? He has a way of seeing past people, into their hearts.

A few nights ago, while hosting a birthday dinner for my best friend, JD surprised me by dressing Polo in a pumpkin costume. In that moment, I realized what it felt like to look someone in the eye and know he understood matters of my heart, even something as silly as a dog costume, 89-cent tacos, or emptying out a wallet to let someone know he cares.

{many thanks to our good friend Troy Grover for capturing this photo of Polo and JD}

Happy Friday!
