Did you know that attending a cocktail party is very similar to getting engagement on social media?

It’s true! Imagine if I walked into a cocktail party and said, “Hey, I have a great camera!,” or “You guys, my photos are on sale!”

You would probably think I’m ego-driven, talk too much, and am completely self-absorbed. But how many of us are doing that on Instagram?

On the contrary, if you're at a cocktail party hanging by the fried food station with a glass of warming red wine, I would come talk to you because you’re just like me. Fried food is my jam!

Similarly, when people are trying to follow others on Instagram, they're saying where are my people?

For seven days, I'm gonna challenge you to talk to your audience on Facebook and Instagram the same way you would talk to people at a cocktail party.

In order to help you do this, below are 7 prompts you can use TODAY to engage your audience on social media.

1. Introduce yourself.
2. Explain what your business does (without selling it).
3. Ask about who they are.
4. Share your favorite food or drink and then ask them what's theirs.
5. Explain what you like about where you live and ask what they like about their city.
6. Ask about their weekend plans after sharing yours.
7. Share what inspired your business and ask what inspires them.

It’s important to realize that each of these prompts have two components: you share something about yourself, then invite them to share too.

Of course, these are just a few examples to get your wheels turning, and I am sure you're gonna come up with lots of great ideas on your own!
