It can be so easy to get intimidated to show up on social media. Especially when new avenues open up like IGTV. It’s so easy to be afraid to create content. To see what others are doing, the level of content they’re creating, and the tools they use to do so.
Instead of letting you sit in that place of comparison that paralyses you from moving forward, I want to equip you with what you need to create content where you are. I can say this with confidence because that’s how I started off in my business and it’s something I continue to do to this day.
If you watch my early YouTube videos, you’ll see I didn’t have a fancy background or videography crew. I turned on my DSLR, stood up in front of my makeshift magazine background with no microphone or lights, and recorded video content (annnnnd right about NOW is when I cringe just looking at these old videos!).
Even today, I use my resources wisely and am resourceful to create content with what I have available…and that's the main point.
(Well, honestly, the main point is WHY DID MY HAIR LOOK SO AWFUL BACK THEN, but let's ignore that for now!)
If you’re ready to show up on social media. If you’re ready to start creating content. If you’re ready to stop letting comparison or excuses hold you back, then you’ll want to hear the answer to these frequently asked questions.
What equipment should I use to shoot videos?
Use the camera you have available. It’s so tempting to wait until you have a shiny new camera but if that’s preventing you from recording today, you have to use the camera you have at your disposal (even if it’s your phone).
- TIP: Because I’m often asked, I’ll share my top two recommendations if you are in the market for something to start off with. I’d suggest getting the Sony A500 or an iPhone X.
What do you use to edit videos?
I started using iMovie to edit videos when I first started, and still occasionally use to this day when I edit them myself. My professional videographer, however, uses Adobe Premier to edit the videos he creates for me. If I create a video on my iPhone, I'll use the VideoShop app to edit videos I record on my phone…super easy to use!
How do I take my videos to the next level?
Invest in a videographer. Whether you collaborate or can leverage a trade of services, this will hands down help you take your recorded content to the next level. I created videos on my own for almost 10 years, but if I could make one big change, it would be to hire a professional to create standout videos for IGTV. The important thing to remember is not to compare yourself to those who have been creating content for a long time or who are in a different stage in their business than you. Focus on creating the best quality content that you can right now where you’re at.
Now that you’ve got the basics figured out, it’s time to put them into practice, create content, and put it out for your audience to see! In this month's issue of Social Curator (Issue 15), I created a complete IGTV strategy (complete with video templates, worksheets, and a look at my exact process). If you'd like to join me inside of my private Facebook group where I teach masterclasses and host critiques, I'd love to see you on the inside of Social Curator!
