Ever since I posted about using a second shooter, I received quite a few emails on the topic. After responding a few people, I realized there may be other blog readers who had the same questions and simply didn’t ask. I thought I’d address some questions here for posterity’s sake…and because I simply don’t have time to respond to everyone (I’m so sorry for this!).

*Does a second shooter use her own gear?
A second shooter usually shoots with her own gear. Camera, lenses, CF cards…the whole nine. There are times when I have the second shooter photograph the event on my CF cards, then burn her a DVD of her images after I have what I need. It varies with individual photographer preferences.

*Are second shooters allowed to use their images on blogs or portfolios?
This is a complex question because there’s not a definite answer. I’ve worked as a second shooter for a photographer who allowed me to use the images in any capacity, and—more often—I’ve worked with photographers who don’t allow me to use the images at all. Usually, you’ll find that photographers allow second shooters to use the images on their blogs (with a direct link to the main photographer), but not allow them to use the images in their portfolio. I think the best way to communicate rules with a second shooter is for her to sign a contract with the main photographer. I know this may seem a little extreme, but it’s truly necessary to have all ambiguity cleared before the event begins. Besides, ever since I went to law school, I believe contracts are a small business owner’s best friend. Seriously.

*Do you expect your second shooters to shoot in Manual Mode?
YES. I know I may seem like a hard-nose about this, but editing images becomes a nightmare if a second shooter shoots in Aperture Priority Mode. For consistency and ease, I require manual shooting at all times.

*What is the average price you pay a second shooter?
This depends on the shooters experience and the main photographer’s benevolence. When I first started second shooting, the only thing I got at the end of the night was a big pat on the back. As time passed, my rates changed. It’s fair to say the average pay here in Orange County is $20-$45/hour, depending on experience.

*Do you need another second shooter?
Unless JD packs up his gear and hits the road, the answer is no. We’ve aligned our schedules and he’ll be with me for the majority of my weddings. If a time comes when he’s unable to attend, I usually turn to a friend I know and trust.

Some of the emails I received alluded to the idea that second shooting with me may be fun. I’m so sorry to disappoint you, but I’m kinda lame. Totally. I mean, take a look at Kimberlee the last time we shot together…

Doesn’t she just scream: Shooting with Jasmine is SO MUCH FUN!! 😉

**I know Kimberlee is going to hate me for posting that picture…but I need her to know that 1: I love her; 2. She’s still beautiful…even after a yawn; and 3. I’m never to be outdone when it comes to taking heinous pictures of each other! :)**
