Goal Setting for the Driven Business Owner

“Dreams don’t work unless you do.” Do you agree?

I certainly do, which is why every year I follow a step-by-step process to map my actions to my aspirations. In fact, the very method I use to break down my goals into clear, actionable steps is in my Productivity Planner

Between that planner and the goal-setting tips I’m sharing below, you’re about to stop dreaming and start DOING. Let’s go!

How to Set Goals

Your Goals Should Scare You

Yea, you read that right… your goals should be so big they scare you. Why? Because when you already know what you want is in the bag, you won’t push yourself to the level you’re capable of.

You won’t feel that same urgency, drive, feistiness, or hunger that motivates you to chase after your dream… But you are waaaay more capable than you give yourself credit for.

Don’t let your feelings get in the way of the action that you take. This is your permission to DREAM BIG, and your reminder to:

>>Let your dream and your goals be *ignited* by your feelings, but *fueled* by your actions.<<

Set Yourself Up for Success

People don’t fail because their dream is too big, they “fail” because they didn’t set themselves up for success with a clear plan of action. Then they often blame their failure on excuses, when in reality it was the quitting that did it. Don’t make the same mistake… if you have already, that’s ok–

>>It’s never too late to get back up and start again.<<

As you get started (or get back up like a Boss!) keep these 5 specific things in mind to ensure you’re setting yourself up for success.

  1. Do you have the capacity?
  2. Set a date of completion
  3. Figure out the “how”
  4. Create tasks in a planner, calendar, or project management software
  5. Create a timeline, including milestones you can track

  2. Keep your annual goals in one notebook so you can track your progress.
  3. Start with a gratitude list.
  4. Brain dump all of your goals and aspirations for the year.
  5. Divide your goals out into 4 quarters.
  6. Then, break them down into monthly goals.
  7. Leave plenty of time to celebrate your future success.
  8. Decompress and visualize your success.

Depend on Discipline (NOT Motivation!)

I’m a firm believer that a business owner doesn't need motivation… They need discipline. Here’s why depending on motivation doesn’t cut it:

We don’t know how to motivate someone else, and we barely know how to motivate ourselves because it looks different for each person.

  • Some people are motivated by money.
  • Others are motivated by legacy.
  • And others are motivated by ease.

Let’s be honest… Motivation is a funny thing because it’s impossible to be motivated all the time, and it’s definitely not sexy, and it certainly isn’t fun.

Motivation may feel good, but it doesn’t drive results. Which is why…

>>A business owner doesn't need motivation… they need discipline.<<

Discipline requires doing something again and again while iterating based on your results… and that, Buttercup, is what makes you successful.
