How to Improve Client Consultations

Dear Jasmine,
I find myself having two and sometimes three consultation meetings before a potential client signs with me. Is this normal or am I doing something wrong?
Sincerely,
Konsultation King

Dear KK,
I prefer to think of situations in a way that's less than wrong/right and more in a way of how to make things better. Technically speaking, if you're signing clients, you must be doing something right, but finding a way to address their questions/needs/concerns in one meeting would be a better use of your time.

In my opinion, three meetings is quite extensive. I don't meet with prospective clients more than once because it takes so much time. If they requested to meet again, I'd suggest arranging a Skype meeting or a phone call.

But let's get to the root of the issue: why prospective clients need to meet again with you. I'd suggest contacting three couples who hired you, and ask them what you could've done better in your initial consultation.  The good news is that since they already hired you, you know they like you and will feel more comfortable being honest.  Better yet, if you met with a couple more than once, ask them why they wanted to meet again.  Once you find the source of the repeat meeting requests, you can change your approach in future consultations.

p.s. I recently recorded a real client consultation at my studio. I was BEYOND nervous and awkward, but it was really helpful to assess my approach for future meetings. If you'd like to see how it unfolded, I'll be sharing the video as part of my 30-Day Photography course on creativeLIVE later this month. You can register for this free class HERE. Hope to see you online soon!
