How to Lead a Team When You Didn’t Plan to Be “The Boss”

Over the years of building my business, I’ve realized something uncomfortable:

I didn’t set out to be a leader.

I set out to chase an idea. A dream. A spark.

Then the business grew.

Then I needed help.

Then I hired a team.

And somewhere between “I can do this myself” and “How did we get here?”… I became a leader.

Except no one handed me a manual. I just crossed my fingers and hoped I was doing it right.

Spoiler: I wasn’t.

In this episode, I’m sharing some of my biggest leadership mistakes — including the time I avoided holding someone accountable because I was afraid they’d lock me out of my own systems (yes, really).

Leadership doesn’t magically download into you when you hire your first employee. It’s learned. Practiced. Refined. And often uncomfortable.

This year, I decided that if I want to build the next level of my business, I need to become the next level version of myself.

We hired a new Sales Director.

We onboarded a new CFO.

I invested in leadership training for my executive team.

And everything shifted.

One of the biggest lessons? Integrity isn’t a buzzword. It’s a standard.

Integrity means doing what you say you’re going to do, by the date you say you’re going to do it. Clear expectations. Clear timelines. Clear ownership.

I also invested in a leadership consultant and recorded a session that was raw, awkward, and deeply honest. No polish. Just a founder admitting where she feels stretched.

Here’s what I know now:

Leadership growth doesn’t happen in comfort.

It happens when you face your blind spots.

When you stop pretending you “should already know.”

When you decide to get better.

Leadership isn’t about being perfect.

It’s about being intentional.

And if you’re willing to learn, you can become the leader your future business requires.

Let’s grow. Together.
