Do you have someone in your life who you just KNOW could figure it out?
Drop them in the middle of a foreign country without a phone? They’ll find their way home.
Give them a problem they’ve never solved before? They’ll find someone who has.
Tell them there isn’t enough money, time, information, or resources? Somehow, someway, they’re going to MAKE. IT. HAPPEN.
Friend, there’s a word for this quality: agency.
And after spending years around some of the most successful entrepreneurs I know, I’ve become convinced that agency is one of the most important qualities a business owner can develop.
Agency is technically your capacity to act independently, make your own choices, and exert power over your environment.
But your girl likes to keep things simple, so here’s my definition:
Agency = make it happen.
Because business WILL business.
You won't have enough leads. A launch won't go according to plan. Your website will crash. Someone on your team will drop the ball. The economy will shift. An algorithm will change.
The question isn't whether something unexpected will happen.
The question is: What will you do next?
In this episode of The Jasmine Star Show, I’m breaking down how to develop more self-agency in business—and I’m sharing the three areas I use to assess it: ownership, action, and responsibility.
I also share the story of one of the highest-agency people I know: Dr. Gabrielle Lyon.
Years ago, I had basically accepted that the physical discomfort I’d been experiencing for more than a decade was simply something I would live with.
I had seen specialists. Taken tests. Tried diets. Searched for answers.
And eventually?
I gave up.
When I told Gabrielle this, she asked me a question that stopped me:
Why are you giving up?
What followed completely changed the way I thought about agency.
She combed through documents, helped me determine which doctors and procedures to pursue, and kept searching when we hit roadblocks. At one point, she was even willing to get on a plane with me to see a specialist in New York.
She wasn't waiting for somebody else to solve the problem.
She was going to find a way forward.
THAT is agency.
And here's the best news: you don't have to be born with it.
Self-agency is a practice.
Start with ownership.
When something isn't working in your business, what's your first reaction?
“The algorithm changed.”
“The economy is bad.”
“My team messed this up.”
“People aren't buying.”
Or do you ask:
What's in my control right now?
High-agency entrepreneurs don't waste precious energy arguing with reality. They look at what's happened and determine what they can influence next.
Then comes action.
How long do you stay stuck before you move?
Because lemme tell you, I know a thing or twelve about overthinking. Researching. Planning. Making the plan better. Thinking about whether the better plan needs…another plan.
But clarity comes from movement.
You don't need complete certainty to take the next step. In fact, sometimes action is what creates the clarity you've been waiting for.
And THAT, friend, is how you become the entrepreneur who figures it out.
