If you knew you were being robbed, what would you do?
Well, sound the alarm, because I’m here to let you know something valuable is being stolen from you. But before you dial 9-1-1, let me give you the 4-1-1 on some good news…
We’re going to outsmart this thief – together.
Ready for some real talk? The thief we need to lock up has a name: Comparison.
That’s right! Let's have a conversation about what comparison is and how it can often sneak up on you (often undetected) to steal what matters most.
When I heard the phrase, “Comparison is the thief of joy” for the first time a couple of years ago, I realized the times when I struggled with feeling dissatisfied or frustrated in my life or my business, it was always on the back of comparing myself to other people or comparing myself to the version of myself I thought I should be.
When I was the happiest, joyful, and most fulfilled, I was doing something I loved, and comparing myself to someone else was the furthest thing from my mind.
Here’s what comparing yourself to others robs from you…
- Peace of mind,
- Contentment,
- Time, and
- Joy!
>>Comparison is a sneaky thief, because not only does it take from you, it also slows your growth.<<
Whenever you focus on doing the thing that YOU want to do or focus on YOUR plans and strategies, you’ll become highly aware that you’re growing at a pace that you can sustain.
But if you feel stuck… like your plans, goals, or strategies are drowning in molasses, chances are comparing yourself to others’ progress and growth is robbing you of your focus and, ultimately, your joy.
Now I’ll be honest: embarrassingly enough, comparison has made me feel sad, slow, and stagnant.
Here’s the kicker though: Someone else could compare themselves to my version of sad and slow, and think, “Wow, I wish I was at where that person is.”
>>When we allow ourselves to buy into the comparison game, we’ll lose more than we could possibly gain, because it’s impossible to measure up to anyone but yourself.<<
Protect your time, don’t lose it by comparing yourself to anyone else, because time is the most valuable thing you own.
While most things in your house are replaceable, you can never buy back time.
So if we know that time is so valuable, why waste it looking and comparing ourselves to everyone else?
Think back to when you were younger. Think back to who you were 10 years ago and something you wanted to gain or accomplish, and you thought to yourself, “If I ever get that, well then, that’s when I’ll know I’ve made it!”
But then something unexpected happens… You get what you wanted and all too quickly realize:
- This isn’t enough.
- I'm not satisfied.
- I want more.
Why? Because the thing we dreamt of doesn't feel like it's enough when compared to someone else.
The fact is, you’ll never feel like you have enough or are enough if you compare what you have or who you are to someone else.
Here’s the secret to safeguarding your peace, time, and joy:
>>What is meant for you, will find you.<<
The next time you look at what somebody else has and you find yourself asking, “Why haven’t I gotten there yet?”, your objective should be, “Good on them because what they’re doing is opening doors for me when it's my time. It's just not my time… yet.”
Remember: it may not be your time yet, but that doesn’t mean you can sit passively waiting for your dream to become a reality.
>>You must do the work necessary to get to where you want to go, or you’ll never get there.<<
Think of it this way…
You can want to run a marathon, create a plan, and schedule time to train, but if you don’t put your shoes on, and put one foot in front of the other, you won’t finish the marathon.
Though it sounds simple, this process can often feel so hard because this is the moment where the work begins.
Now that you’ve protected your joy from the thief that is comparison, you have time to:
- Start where you are.
- Use what you have.
- Do what you can… Today!
Having an idea is great. Having a plan is better. But actually doing the work… Now THAT is incomparable. And guess what? Nobody can steal that away from you!
