When everything goes wrong: what to do when things don’t go as planned

I’m sitting in my living room in front of a bright ring light, palms sweaty. My hair and makeup were done with extra care, and I'm wearing my favorite green dress that JD says is his favorite. #thanksbae

Everything is perfect, the cameras are rolling… I’m ready to go live with Gary Vaynerchuk.

You see, a few weeks ago I had invested in a 5-minute coaching session on Instagram Live with Gary Vee. I’d waited for this chance on baited breath.

…AND THEN TECHNOLOGY FAILED.

I get a lot of questions from business owners about what to do when things don’t go as planned. Either they were disappointed because they weren’t able to talk to somebody, a business deal fell through, or a launch flopped.

In business things do not always go as planned.

On the day I was supposed to join Gary on Instagram Live, my team and I did everything we could.

  • I requested to go live multiple times
  • I commented over and over
  • My team bombarded his team with messages
  • We prayed to the Instagram gods

But NOTHING worked.

I was there, Gary was there, but technology failed us.

As I stood there in my frustration, I had to remember to take the advice I’d given to so many entrepreneurs before: It is not our responsibility to control what happens, it is our responsibility to control how we react to things when they don’t go as planned.

So, I could feel bad for myself (which would have been warranted), or I could choose to believe that something greater is in store.

Although it would be easy to wallow, I am going to believe that everything is going to work out.

Friend, if you can relate to this scenario, remember that things won't always go as planned in business. That’s what makes it interesting!

When there are things outside of our control, the only thing we can control is our reaction to the situation. We can choose to be unhappy, but boo I think the life you’ve been called to is so much more positive.

Switching our mindset around a negative situation is the exact thing that will propel us to receiving the next opportunity.

So, I believe it will all work out in the end. And I hope you do too.
