An email to my best friends

Today I sent an email to my best friends. Since so many of us are all over the world right now, email is the best form of communication and keeps us close. I wrote an email and I decided to post it here. For posterity’s sake. After reading it a bit later, I realized I want to remember how I’m feeling at this exact moment. The good, the bad, and the slightly German.

so i’m sitting here getting a pedicure and crying. you know, a little bit. the frey is playing on KBIG, you know…that soft rock station. the one we made fun of in high school. and now i’m crying to the music. what has happened to me!?!!? what’s next…crying at folgers commercials?
i think i’m just extra emotional because i’m stressed and scared about next week and the creativelive course.
i didn’t even want to get a pedicure. but, really, i can’t go to seattle with jacked up feet. that’s just wrong. on so many levels. what if i wear open-toe shoes and then everyone runs away? that would be embarrassing…because it’s live on the internet and all.
so here’s the deal. i’m just gonna lay it all out there because if all this goes south, you’ll be there to help support me.
*we got home from the wedding last night at 1:30am. and we ate quesadillas. at 1:30am. if i’ve ever experienced eater’s remorse, it was then. i’m feeling so puffy it ain’t even funny.
*i feel like i might have bitten off more than i can chew. and i’m not talking about the quesadillas. this seattle event is scaring the crap outta me. like, every last bit of anything. i’ve been a walking ball of nerves for the past two weeks. i wake up in the morning and my first thought is: i hope i don’t suck.
*i feel so much pressure shooting the wedding. there’s so, so much going into the production of this event…but that’s the craziest thing of all: it’s not an event. it’s her WEDDING. i’m just so overwhelmed wanting to give her everything she deserves, but at the same time balancing the fact that people are tuning in to watch me work. please pray i can keep everything balanced and in perspective.
*all i really want to do is crawl in between the couch cushions with a pint of ben&jerry’s and catch up on project runway. because, really, i need me some heidi klum to visper dat everyting will be AUF WIEDERSEHEN!!

in lighter news, i can’t wait to see everyone at bi’s wedding. am i the only one dying to ‘cat claw’ on the dancefloor?! bring it.
soft rock, puffy, and craving ice cream,

Loved the honesty of this post…

Hello..this is your BFF in MI. I too am scraed of Seattle…you see, I’ll be ordering the Downloads because I want to make a go of this photography passion of mine (and couldn’t get off the day job to see it LIVE). And at age 54, I’m scared, too. So let’s make a pack…I’ll give you a break as my mentor…if you’ll be gentle with my dream and fear. And remember, you have already been absolutely fabulous and the best teacher to me (virtually)–and given me courage by honestly sharing your journey…so there is no way that you will fail–it’s just another step down the path. It will be ‘ok’ and in the words of Heidi, you will be ausgezeichnet (wonderful!). πŸ™‚

@Natchtstern: I know Heidi says ‘goodbye’ when she says AUF WIEDERSEHEN, but it sounds so nice, doesn’t it? Like, the way it just rolls off her tongue? Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. Even though it probably shouldn’t! πŸ˜‰

Jasmine, you are going to do great. You always do great. Your anxiety reminds me of what I have been reading a lot about in Luke 12 right now. Jesus tells us not to "have an anxious mind. For all these things the nations of the world seek after, and your Father knows that you need these things. but seek the kingdom of God and all these things shall be added to you." Don’t worry about the quesadilla or the crazy amounts of people who are watching, just be YOU and rock it. Rest on God and remember how far He has taken you.

Jasmine, after seeing your photos, so many amazing photos, Im sure your gonna do great this week! creativeLIVE and people like you and Chase Jarvis who are willing to share what they are doing and how they are doing it, have taught me, at 17, how to be a photographer and a director. Without people doing what you do through your blog and through your workshop, I would not be able to take photos like I can today.

The things you teach reach beyond just your blog and your workshop. I have been able to take what I have learned from people who are sharing about photography, and make my Eagle Project benefit my Pregnancy Help Center by giving them a new DVD to tell their incredible story.

You benefit people in ways you would not even believe, and for that I am grateful beyond words. Go get that pint of Ben and Jerry’s you deserve and do great this week!

Jasmine: I’ve become a fan recently and I’ve managed to get through your entire blog and website. While your fears may be human, you have to know that every other time you’ve felt this type of apprehension, you’ve persevered. This will be another triumph and you will walk away relieved and joyous, thinking to yourself "I did it and it was fabulous!". Believe in yourself, your talent, and the faith that those around you have in you – including all of us whom you don’t know….but are rooting for you!

Jasmine: Thanks for sharing your anxiety with all of us. But remember all the challenges you’ve already faced and conquered. Wow Jasmine, you have nothing to fear!! You are going to do great. Just shoot like you normally do and act like it’s just another ne of your fabulous weddings!!!! Just keep on doing what you know best and act like you are not getting filmed. I bet you are going to do so great that you are going to forget all about the cameras. Just be yourself and have fun.
Here is a little something that came to my mind:

    2 Timothy 1:7 (The Message)

5-7That precious memory triggers another: your honest faithβ€”and what a rich faith it is, handed down from your grandmother Lois to your mother Eunice, and now to you! And the special gift of ministry you received when I laid hands on you and prayedβ€”keep that ablaze! God doesn’t want us to be shy with his gifts, but bold and loving and sensible.

    August 22nd, 2010 at 11:28 pm

Just bought the downloads for a little after the event starts. I know I have no authority in your life and this probably won’t calm you down completely if at all, but know that I’m looking forward to learning a lot by watching you work and seeing if what I do on a wedding day is at all the "right" thing to do or at least along the same lines. Look at it as a collaboration and team effort, then it might not be so scary? I’m just excited to see you work and walk through an entire wedding day. Just do what you know how to do and it will be fantastic!

  28. Cheryl

    August 22nd, 2010 at 11:39 pm

First of all… just BREATHE. It seems like your nerves have helped you plenty int thepast so … When it’s time to start, Forget that the cameras will even be filming you and pretend you’re telling a friend (because that is exactly who you will be telling) whatgoes through your mind and the filming considerations you ponder while you record anyone’s special day. I know it will be wonderful and I can’t wait to start class. For the record, you can "bring it" even without a pedicure!

Don’t you know we’re here because… we love you. Every little bit of you. You being yourself is what keeps us coming back. I hope I get to see just you on the Creative Live feed. You being… you. Don’t sweat it, because you can’t screw it up. Even if you tried. Love you and everything you are. You are my mentor, my example, and everything I would want in a friend. Your rock J*!

J* It’s totally normal to be nervous about taking on something like this, even if you are a total rockstar (you are, BTW!!). I totally understand how you feel. It’s that generous soul that makes you want to give so much of yourself to make everyone else happy… but when you feel nervous, remember that we are all rooting for you and those of us who will be in there in person (me, sans pedicure; my esthetician is on vacation!) will be sending you massive doses of positive energy and support. And if that doesn’t work, just know that they have Ben & Jerry’s in Seattle, and we can all dig in together and laugh about everything when the cameras stop rolling. You are going to do an amazing job. I have complete faith in you!! πŸ™‚

Truthfully even if you totally messed up (which you won’t) we would still love you. Because you have created such an amazing community of love and support for us. But I knowthat, in the words of Tim Gunn, your gonna "make it work"!

You make it sound like you’ve never done this before! Sheesh. Get over it, already! Even if you sucked, your suck would be at a level that is ass-kickingly, we’re-not-worthy awesome for the rest of us. And that’d be if you just came out and said "Hi, I’m Jasmine" at the event, or if you were airshooting the wedding — yeah, no camera, you just putting your fingers up in the air near your face and making a clicking sound. It’d still be better shots than we’d all get. Really. Wipe the fear off your face and do it, don’t think it. (Okay, did that work? I hope so….)

  50. Tara

    August 23rd, 2010 at 5:12 am

I am so thrilled you took them up on this offer :). I wish I could offer some wonderful words of encouragement but I didn’t apply to be there live (even though I would LOVE to be there) because I get that fear thing. The thought of going on camera makes me slightly nauseous.

But I do know this, I have had little to no opportunity to learn wedding photography from an experienced photographer. This year I have been given the gift of a couple brides that allowed me to learn as I did their weddings. And that I discovered that love shooting weddings is a bit of understatement. Yes there is work and stress and more work and yet more stress but I love doing it.

But I want to get better. My funds are severly limited right now (being laid off from the job that was paying the bills, so this currently is my only income)limits my travel/workshop opportunities.

To a girl in the middle of the Canadian prairies with no mentors or opportunities to achieve one here – this means a lot to me. It’s affordable education from someone whose work I really enjoy.

But I get the fear – I would be too. But at the same time I’m very excited for myself to just hear your thoughts on this crazy wedding photography business.

Thank you for having the courage to do it ::)

I love this post Jasmine. So raw and unscripted. You do not suck; you will be great. Just do what you do and everything will be fabulous. You are a talented photographer, mentor, teacher and individual. Any woman that is lucky enough to have you as her photographer on her wedding day will be greatly satisfied**cough**we have seen your work. πŸ˜‰ I can only imagine how nervous you are for the Creative Live Jasmine* Wedding and you should be!!! It is a huge step in your life/career and it is a step that you will surpass in ways you did not think were imaginable. I hope that you enjoyed your pedicure [I definitely need one] and that the rest of your Sunday has be wonderful. Have a great week, good luck and give them 100% of you. I’ve been following your blog for the past 3 years. My sister (who is a photographer) introduced your blog to me and I was hooked. I love all aspects of your blog because it encompasses your life. You are such an inspirational photographer and it’s been a privilege to get to know you through your blog. You KIR even when you’re not sure you want ‘everyone’ to know of your fears, weaknesses, goals and aspirations. To me, that is truly inspiring. If you could see yourself through the eyes of others, you would see how beyond amazing you are; in work and in life! Even on the days you are feeling less than yourself. Don’t be nervous, just be you. Be still and breathe.

    August 23rd, 2010 at 6:26 am

risk / reward. The risk is great but the reward is greater and if you mess up people will still learn from you, what not to do. Everytime I take on a bigger badder better deal than the last I agonize. And then I up the ante next time. No matter what you are loved and adored and you are a great teacher. That can’t go away.

  56. brianna

    August 23rd, 2010 at 9:10 am

Well now, this email looks slightly familiar!! Here’s the thing: I love you(<– that’s not the advice but it’s equally important). You are a crazy mess when you are nervous but it’s a good thing. It means you’ve stepped out of your comfort zone and are doing what is necessary to be bigger, better, and badder (in a good way) then you already are. Knowing nothing about your crazy world, it’s obvious that people want to learn from you…not a perfect version of you…just YOU. That makes it easy–you just be yourself and do what you’ve always done. So my advice is, feel the fear and do it anyway. Embrace it. And theeeen, rest your feet and get ready to party the night away in Santa Barbara because I will be there (with toothpicks holding my eyes open) ready to party the night away and squeeze your big head!

  57. Shanna

    August 23rd, 2010 at 9:28 am

Jasmine, if this is any help at all, I have been talking about this Creative Live workshop to my boyfriend for weeks now (you know talking about it like I know you) – wait I think that may make you more nervous -but I am excited – because I get a chance to learn from you, when other wise it would impossible, cause I live like a 100 thousand miles away, in Johannesburg, South Africa. So thank you, for putting yourself out there in the world, thanks for having the guts to try. I admire that. Everybody gets nervous, I sometimes cry to corny soft rock music too, usually Air Supply, so you not alone there and I know the only way out of fear is through. You’ve got this. Trust. πŸ˜‰ πŸ™‚

I just shot my own sisters wedding last week. It was really the only time I’ve ever been really nervous. Yes, I’ve had the butterflies racing around my belly to keep me sharp before but this time it was gut wrenching and actually making me emotional. But knowing it was me who was doing this for her was the most wonderful feeling. I shoot my brothers wedding in a month.

Check out the incredible library, as well as the bubble gum wall at Pike St Market. It’s a riot! I know that you will have a great time once you get here. We are all very excited to see you!

Chillax! There will be a lot of people watching and yes, it is a big event, but it is ONLY big because people like you and they want to learn from you. All people want is for you to do your thing so we can learn from it πŸ™‚ You’ll be great!

J* I have never posted on your site before but feel like the time has come πŸ™‚ I just can not express enough my gratitude to you for doing this Creative live shoot! I have been shooting for a year now and have taken on a few weddings and seem to really have a passion for shooting those moments , though it can be very stressful and exhausting. the results are worth it all. Having no funds to attend workshops or no opportunity to train with a more experienced photographer, this creative live course you are teaching has given me so much encouragement. There are times when doubt seems to creep in , especially since everything I have learn has been self taught and then you run across an email that says J* will be shooting a live wedding and teaching for 5 days ! Then the sun seems to come out again . I know you will be amazing! Your passion and honesty is something rare and always seems to show through your work. Even if something does go wrong ,it’s o.k that’s just part of this crazy thing called life, and it’s a new day tomorrow πŸ™‚ Thank you again for taking on this new adventure and for opening yourself up for us photographers out there who may not have another opportunity like this. I know it will be inspiring. I can’t wait to learn from you! Thank you , Thank You Thabk you!

Jasmine, I found you 3 years ago. I followed your blog since then – almost every day. Your pictures are my inspiration, as Vogue is yours. I love the way you share, communicate and blog. You are my little hero. To shorten it up: You can do it!Can’t wait to see you shooting … and: I’m listening to The Fray now…

Jasmine! The phrase "I hope I don’t suck" pretty much runs through my head before every wedding I shoot! You will do amazing. And all those people watching you on the internet? They’re all rooting for you and know you won’t suck. That’s why they’re tuning in in the first place (:

This is the truth… husband is at the stove cooking while I am at the kitchen island reading your blog. He turns to me and asks, what are you reading Jasmine Star again? I said, how did you know? He says, I can tell by the smirk on your face as well as the little giggle that you’re trying to hold back. He gets me, he really gets me!!! Anyway, you really know how to bring a smirk and little giggle to someone’s day πŸ™‚

dearest Jasmine, this is why i love you (your blog, not in a stalker’ish way, but you know what i mean). you are on here, telling all of us how afraid you are for what’s to come. every time i have a shoot, i’m afraid too. afraid of disappointing my client, and any potential client that may find my work. you….have no need to fret…because you ALWAYS produce great things & you settle for nothing less than perfect. this is why i love your blog & your work. can’t wait to see you at the Seattle workshop!! YOU CAN DO IT!!

you have captured the feelings of 100% of photographers out there…whether its weddings or shooting the CEO of a company. Thank you for posting this and being real. It is encouraging and revealing…a reminder that we are all just human. This wedding will be wonderful and you look back on it with a smile and satisfaction only you can know. Cheers.

Jas, Brianna is spot on in what she said. All of it. Just be you – that is exactly who we are tuning in to see. And it’s because we all love you already. Think of us as cheerleaders and supporters. Rah, rah, sis-boom-bah! πŸ˜‰

  87. James Reyes

    August 24th, 2010 at 3:44 am

You can’t go wrong Jasmine. People just want to get a sense of what you already do, on a daily basis. If you didn’t even say a word during the day of the wedding event to the live audience, but just carried out your photography as you usually do, I’d still learn more from that than any other source.

I know this is easy to say; try to have fun and savor the moment. Only a select few get this "opportunity." Jasmine, whatever happens, the experience will undoubtedly make you stronger. That alone is something to be thankful for.

It’s too bad that Jasmine of next week isn’t here to tell you how much fun you had during the CreativeLive event πŸ™‚
It’s hard work planning the classes and organizing all the details but it will all be so worth it. Know that you have lots of people cheering you on and wishing you only the best !

Don’t let the enemy steal your joy! This is what you wanted, this is what you worked so hard for, you’ve earned it! Don’t freak out! You own this, this is the J* show & we are all just going to watch you in awe. You are most fabulous when you’re real & simply gorgeous when your goofy. Embrace the moment, this IS huge, but not huge stress & wondering if you’ll do well, but huge accomplishment, joy, honor. You are more than worthy πŸ™‚ God is all over this and you know it! He’s got your back…who can be against you! You got this!!!

You are such a great human being.
I’m sure everything will be ok and you’ll be amazing.
But anyway, remember that for us watching, the fact that you are scared and stressed out too is really something special, because we get to know how you deal with the same fears we all get when we shoot a wedding (something that by know is probably just the normal drill, for you).
And even if you happen to screw up, just pick yourself up and keep going, and we can learn something important from that too. I’m pretty sure your screw-ups are what I’d call "me at my best" πŸ˜‰

Hey Jaz, I think that dinner thing is a good idea tomorrow. We’ll probably put each other at ease. If it makes you feel any better, I’m not the least bit concerned you’re going to ruin my wedding. I’m more worried I’m only 2 days out and I still don’t have a bra.

Here are some thoughts… 1) You are shooting a wedding. You have done this a bazillion times. When you get into your groove, the nerves will go away! 2) If God is for us, who is against us?? 3) Notice these feelings you’re having… that you’re scared, nervous, insecure… Soon, this wedding will be done, and you will have completed this task… which won’t even really be a task when you get there, since you love doing this. But, next time you feel those same feelings, you will be able to look back and say, "Hey, last time I felt this way, I achieved something awesome by pushing through my fear." Not that you would just turn around and back out, but recognize how you’re feeling, and that you’re going to DO this anyway! And not only are you going to do this, you’re going to rock it. Because you always do.
    4) And then, once you’ve finished this, make sure you celebrate… overcoming an obstacle/fear/milestone of any kind is worth celebrating… and if you forget to celebrate, it will be less rewarding… so make sure you do that!
    5) Sure there will be people watching you… but think of them as guests at the wedding! Or, people tuning in to have a good time watching YOU have a good time.
    6) Remember to have a good time.
    Much love to you.

I’m sitting here at my desk with the biggest smile on my face after reading your post. It’s actually the first post of yours I’ve ever read, although I’ve been a fan for a few years now. You sweet girl! Thank you for sharing how utterly human you are…it makes me feel okay with the swarms of butterflies that gather in my stomach days before every shoot. All we can do is try to transform those scared little butterflies into ass-kicking robo-flies, right?!! xo

Jasmine, looking up to you it’s incredible to see the raw emotion that we all experience. I’ve been through a similar situation and I’ve found while it can be difficult, it also has allowed me to create some of my best work. It’s as if the emotions are really just shining through. Love your work and advice.
