FAQ : Makeup and Shoes

So, it’s that time of year. Seasons change, fads wilt, and the newest issue of W Magazine is published. Gosh, I love fashion. I even watch fashion shows like Project Runway to get Heidi Klum’s Yur eidur IN, oar yur OUWT weekly reality TV fix. Yes, I know I shouldn’t really admit this (wouldn’t it sound better if I was reading Whitman’s Leaves of Grass for the umpteenth time?!), but I devour such mind mush…in fact, bring me a bigger spoon! 😉

I do, however, think that when it comes to wedding fashion for a photographer, I’m a total numbskull. There are times when I see pictures of myself shooting and I wonder if I got run over by a bus before the reception. Twice. I do my best, but after eight hours of shooting, corralling lost nieces and nephews for family pictures, and trying not to miss a beat, I’m afraid the Fashion Police are on my tail.

I often get emails from other photographers asking for my opinion as to what are the best shoes for shooting a wedding. To be honest, I have yet to find the perfect pair, but I can offer a little insight. Because I’m vertically challenged (i.e. short), I like a slight heel to my wedding shoes and I usually buy only leather-soled shoes. I know I sound completely matronly when I admit to owning a pair of Naturalizers, but—hey—I can own it! 😉 I bring this pair of shoes out when I know I’m going to have an extra long and tedious day. In a more fashion-forward arena, I’ll wear leather low-heels from Antonio Melani…these little babies are no longer made, but they’re simply amazing. I don’t know what I’m going to do when they konk out on me!

Another email I receive deals with what makeup I wear. A few months ago, Jessica Claire did a Happy Hour with Blu Domain and when someone asked her what makeup she recommends, she said to email me…thanks!…thanks? I’m not sure if this was a blessing or a curse because I was inundated with queries. Basically, my response was the same: I wear MAC makeup exclusively. And I’m heavy-handed on wedding days. I use quite a bit of coverage and darker eye-shadow colors because I want it to show up after six hours of hard work, heat, glisten (I don’t sweat…I swear!), and stress. By the time I show up to the reception venue and I meet the catering manager or on-site coordinator, I still want to look put-together. After all, it’s their first impression of me and I want to be sure I still look professional.

So while I claim to love fashion, please don’t judge me by my wedding day attire! 😉 For me, it’s far more important to feel good on a wedding day, than look good. Besides, I’m happy to leave the looking-good part of the day to my brides! 🙂

Happy Tuesday!
