The Secret to Growing on Instagram…are you ready for it?

Last month I had the honor of being a keynote speaker at Angie Lee’s conference for women entrepreneurs, Pays To Be Brave. I was invited to speak about Instagram, and this keynote was packed with all new content, practical tips, and of course: the secret to growing on Instagram.

Are you ready for it?

The secret to growing on Instagram is to stop growing.

I’m sure a lot of you are thinking, “Ummm, what?” But give me a couple seconds and we will get on the same page!

We tend to think if we can just get more followers we will have more customers. But my question is: Are you converting your current followers into customers?

Buttercup, regardless of how many followers we have—10, 100, 100,000—people are asking the same question. The answer isn’t more followers. It’s to double down on your current audience and serve them well.

GO DEEP, NOT WIDE.

What I mean by that is: You need to deeply understand why your current followers are following you.

If you say, “They’re following me because they want to live their best life,” and you flounder when I ask what their version of their best life is, you don’t know them.

When you say they’re following you because they want to lose the last 5 pounds of belly fat, it’s not.

  • It’s about loving themselves.
  • It’s about wanting their husband to see them in a new way.
  • It’s about something so much deeper than weight loss.

So how do we go deep?

We talk to them. We respond to every comment, have a conversation with everyone in our DMs, and follow up on every poll response.

And if you’re saying, “Jasmine, I would talk but no one is talking to me.”

My question then becomes:

  • How many comments have you left on other’s accounts?
  • How many DMs have you sent just to give a little Instagram love?

I believe in the 10X rule. If you want one comment, leave 10. If you want a DM, send 10 DMs.

When we engage with our followers, then we understand them. When we understand them, we know how to talk to them. And when we talk to them, we know how to help them.

Friend, we are not in the business of business, we are in the business of serving people so their lives change.

So, the next time you think you need more customers, please don’t be persuaded to think you need more followers. Instead, have deep, meaningful conversations with your current customers and solve their problems in a way that resonates with them.

In a sea of others offering the same service or product you do, be the only choice for them because you understand them differently than the others, you talk to them differently, and you help them differently.
