I have always been an advocate for setting goals and doing everything possible to achieve them.
Because, at the end of the day, YOU are the only person who can bring your dreams into fruition.
*And oh how much better the world will be once your goals come to life.*
But, I also understand the paralyzing fear of failure and the uncertainty of where to start. So, for that reason, I want to share with you the 5 steps I take every time I set a new goal.
#1 Start with the End in Mind
It may sound obvious, but the first thing you need to do before taking any action is to determine the end goal.
What I mean by this is that you need to outline a clear and specific goal. This goal should be something you have complete control over.
For example, you may want to increase your social media following by 500 this month. While that is a specific goal, and certainly one you can attain, it isn’t an outcome that lies within your control. In fact, it’s more of a wish.
Instead, reframe the goal to center around the actions you will take to increase your audience.
Here are a couple examples of goals that place the outcome firmly within your grasp:
- Launch a new product next month.
- Start a podcast in Q3.
- Launch a membership by the end of the year.
#2 Take Action Daily
Once you determine your goal, you can then reverse engineer what actions you need to take to get you there.
- Break yearly goals down to quarterly goals.
- Break quarterly goals down to monthly goals
- Break monthly goals down to weekly goals.
- Break weekly goals down to daily goals.
It may seem daunting at first, but outlining the steps you need to take will actually reduce the overwhelm associated with one large goal and make it much more manageable.
From that point, you no longer need to focus on the end goal every day, but rather the small actions you need to take consistently to get results.
#3 Verbalize Your Goal
Perhaps the most terrifying part of making a dream a reality is vocalizing what it is you are aiming for. It’s common to want to keep your goal to yourself for fear of judgment, but oh sweet soul, please don’t.
>>Don’t buy into the lie that your dreams should only exist in the dark.<<
The simple act of telling people keeps you accountable and brings you closer to achieving them. And don’t underestimate the power of other people who can buoy you up when things get hard and continue to cheer you on when you want to quit.
#4 Failure Does Not Exist
More than anything else, remember that it’s ok to stumble along the path towards your goals… In fact, it’s expected.
Every step along the way is a lesson that needs to be learned, so choose to see every experience as feedback for what to do or not do in the future.
Express gratitude for each opportunity to learn, to grow, and to evolve.
#5 Don’t Reinvent the Wheel
Lastly, following in the footsteps of others who have previously paved a path will speed up your success.
Sure, you can build your business and chase your dreams without the wisdom of others… but why would you want to?
